Installing a memory module in your server

STEP 1: Getting started

Check your server's system manual for information specific to your system.

Before touching any electronic components, make sure you are properly grounded. By wearing a wrist strap, you can prevent static electricity stored on your body or clothing from damaging your computer. 

And if you don't have wrist straps, here is how to ground yourself:

 

  • Turn off the computer, monitor, and all accessories (printer, speakers, etc.)
  • Unplug the computer power cord. (You can unplug your accessories if you like.)
  • Briefly touch an unpainted metal part of your computer case.
  • Plant your feet and don't walk around. If you do need to walk around, ground yourself again before touching any of the internal parts of your computer.

 

STEP 2: Unplug your system

 

Disconnect your server from its power source. To be safe, unplug the power cord.

 

STEP 3: Find the memory bays

 

Always use caution when removing the cover of your system. Because every server is different, simply refer to your system manual for proper instructions. The location of the memory expansion socket also may vary with each computer manufacturer. If your server supports the dual-channel memory, follow the system manufacturer’s guidelines for proper installation sequence.

STEP 4: Insert your modules

 

Memory sockets may vary with each manufacturer. Most systems require that the memory upgrade be seated within the socket at a 90-degree angle or upright position. Some systems require the memory upgrade within the socket at a 45-degree angle or tilted position. Again, your system manual should provide this information.

Hold the module by both ends and position it in the socket. The DIMM will be notched to match the DIMM socket; the socket will have the key that matches the notch between the gold contacts on the DIMM. This notch/key ensures the module can be plugged into the socket only one way. Firmly push the memory upgrade directly down into the socket, making certain the module is completely seated in the socket. You need to use about 20 or 30 pounds of pressure, which may be more than you expect. Keep pushing! The ejector tabs at each end of the socket will automatically snap into the locked position. Repeat this procedure for any additional modules you are installing.

STEP 5: Replace cover

 

Once you have installed your memory upgrade, please refer to your system manual for proper set-up configuration instructions. Some systems will automatically recognize the additional memory, while others  may require that you run the system set-up configuration utility.
