1. 19.03.2015 - according to one of our customer report, ASRock X99M Killer Micro-ATX motherboard, in order for the Samsung SM951 to become visible in the UEFI (BIOS),you'll need firmware version 1.73 (not yet available on ASRock's website, need to contact ASrock support directly to obtain this Bios)

Samsung Electronics Now Mass Producing an Extremely Fast, Low-powered PCIe SSD for Today’s Notebook PCs

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has begun mass producing a high-performance, low-powered PCIe* solid state drive (SSD), the SM951, for use in ultra-slim notebook PCs and workstations.
“We are helping to accelerate growth of the ultra-slim notebook PC market with the introduction of this energy-efficient, high-speed PCIe SSD,” said Jeeho Baek, Senior Vice President of Memory Marketing at Samsung Electronics. He added that “We will continue to introduce next-generation high-density SSDs with improved performance and increased differentiation, as we further strengthen our business competitiveness in global SSD market.”
The SM951 boasts outstanding performance, supporting both PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 2.0 interfaces. For use in the latest ultra-slim notebooks, it can read and write sequentially at 1,600MB/s (megabytes per second) and 1,350MB/s respectively based on PCIe 2.0. This performance level is approximately three times faster than that of the latest SSD with a SATA interface and about 30 percent faster than that of the Samsung XP941, its predecessor. In addition, the new SSD’s random read and write speeds reach up to 130,000 and 85,000 IOPS (inputs/outputs per second) respectively.
For ultra-slim notebooks and workstations wanting to adopt the PCIe 3.0 interface, the SM951 can read and write sequentially at 2,150MB/s and 1,550 MB/s respectively, which would provide approximately four times faster sequential reading performance compared to current SATA SSDs. With a PCIe 3.0 interface, the drive achieves substantially higher energy efficiency, requiring only about 450MB/s per watt for sequential reading and 250MB/s per watt for sequential writing, which translates into a more than 50 percent of improvement in performance per watt over that of the XP941 SSD.
In addition, the SM951 is the first SSD to adopt the L1.2 low power standby mode (which allows all high-speed circuits to be turned off when a PC is on sleeping or in hibernation) as defined by PCI-SIG (the PCIe standards body). By embracing the L1.2 level of standby operation, the SM951’s power consumption is drastically reduced – to under 2mW, about a 97 percent decrease from the 50mW consumed using a L1 state.
Samsung’s SM951 comes in the M.2 form factor (80mm x 22mm), which is only about one seventh the size of a 2.5 inch SSD. Also, it weighs approximately six grams. The drive’s compactness is well suited for most notebook PC designs, freeing up space for other components including the battery. The SM951 lineup consists of 512, 256 and 128GB SSDs.
With its SM951 and other Samsung PCIe SSDs using a 10-nanometer class** MLC NAND flash production platform, Samsung believes it is in an excellent position to rapidly expand the global PCIe SSD market. Samsung will also work on timely introduction of next-generation PCIe SSDs that support the NVMe*** interface, which will provide even further performance increases.
Now confirmed compatible in desktop machines including the 2006-2012 Model Mac Pro!
The latest news on the SM951 is that it is fully compatible and bootable in all new Intel X99-chipset motherboards, and with most previous generation Z97-chipset based motherboards, such as the ASRock Z97 Extreme6 (no adapter required). The first delivery unit was defectuous and get RMAed.
The 2nd one works fine as expected on a ASUS P8Z77-V Deluxe or Sabertooth x99 W10 x64 (as secondary media). Not tested as OS boot media.
However, never try to use SAMSUNG SSD Toolbox (Magician) in the PC where this device is plugged in.
You can get SMART infos only thru 3rd parties such as HWINFO64 or Crystal DiskInfo.
Do overpositionning (10%) as for any standard SSD.
5 stars for Flexx Support, 1 star for SAMSUNG.
Read it should work from Asus themselves, too late after ordering i read the opposite and had to RMA the drive back to flex.
I´m sure the product is great, but.. -1 star to asus, 5 stars to Flexx for their fast and freindly support and help, and a weak 3 star for a product that as released without support from all but a few manufacturers.
Exactly as expected. Too bad it was not their V-NAND technology.
Blazing fast, but it overheats and slows down now and again. Heatsinks and a fan placed in front would definately keep it cool.

Super easy install on Asrock Extreme 6 which recognized as a boot drive. Obviously fast and mine has been nice and cool with a dual GPU set up and a reasonable amount of airflow. I know there have been some complaints about running hot but that hasn't been the case with mine.
Fitted this into an Asrock X99m Extreme 4 motherboard. Motherboard recognized the drive without problems and windows 7 x64 installed just as easily as it does on SATA drives. The SM 951 delivers amazing performance - almost 2GB/sec read in AS-SSD, 1,500MB/sec read and write in CrystalDiskMark. The future of a SATA-less PC is here! Great drive, highly recommended for those with a compatible m.2 motherboard.
Surprised to fined the product on sale, Even more surprised at the price. Tested and it does 1500 MB per second write as it said on the can, white washes the competition at the moment at this price, twice the speed at generally less money. Always love Samsung Hard discs, fast and reliable, Samsung with these new SSD's are maintaining their standards and innovation. 10 out of 10.
Two 512G units loaded on ASRock x99 motherboard extreme 11, 4 Partitions 256G each Dual boot, OS PT1, Data PT4, Game Os PT3 games PT2. Allowing duel channel read speeds Os/Program 2200 MB and data/game 2200 MB, Love It. With 32 GB memory at 2666 and the potential to Ram Disc and SAS to try, this bird fly's.
Have installed it on a x99 board from asus, win 7 x64.
I'm quite satisfied with it, and although magician does not support it directly, it report a reed speed of over 2200 m sec and write just over 1500.
Hoverer its not for everyone, since using its as boot drive require uefi installation/boot.
latest bios v. from asus did not discover it.
